Our client, a highly regarded London-based solicitors specialising in crime, family law and human rights have an opening for a Billing Manager to join their team, who has good communication skills, is highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges. 

The purpose of this role is to contribute to the effectiveness of the Finance team by providing a comprehensive and efficient service to internal and external clients in order that the business objectives of the firm and the department are achieved. To maintain the high standard of service offered to the firm’s existing clients and to assist in furthering the professional reputation of the team, the office and the firm.


Responsibilities 

  • Oversee the end-to-end billing process, including billing and collection efforts. 
  • Work closely with the Finance Director to ensure the team deliver accurate and timely entry of all billing transactions in accordance with internal and client service level agreements.  
  • Provide interpretation, guidance, and assistance to colleagues regarding all aspects of the firm's billing processes. 
  • Produce and circulate key billing data (WIP, performance metrics, targets) to proactively drive billing performance. 
  • Work with the Finance Manager to drive the full recovery of WIP and accelerate the conversion of WIP to billable fees and cash collections. 
  • Coordinate with the Billing Team to implement and administer billing best practices and develop efficiency. 
  • Continually review and identify process improvement opportunities and leading on the delivery of these. 
  • Document and keep up to date all processes and systems which provide easily accessible reference for both internal and external audits. 
  • Ensure all respective financial controls and the firm’s policies and procedures are always adhered to. 
  • Work closely with the Accounts Team and ensure that communication lines are open and effective. 
  • Ensure service levels and quality of work are maintained to the highest standards. 
  • Ensure strict deadlines are met at month and year-end.

Candidate Profile

  • A minimum of 5 years legal billing experience, reconciling ledgers and Inter-Partes billing, and managing a team. 
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the firm’s billing systems or an ability to develop such knowledge and understanding. 
  • Experience in Inter-Partes billing, Private billing, and Legal Aid / Legal Help billing processes and procedures. 
  • Well-developed and professional interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with people at all levels of the firm. 
  • Excellent leadership skills for effective team management. 
  • Analytical skills to correctly comprehend and communicate data and reconcile client matters.
  • Thorough knowledge of statutory regulations such as VAT, SRA Accounts Rules, GDPR.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and bookkeeping procedures such as posting, balancing, double entry. Understanding ledger postings and correcting errors on the system.
  • Experience of Proclaim is preferable.
